Heartworm Preventative Medicine

Heartworms are transmitted through the bite of a mosquito so all dogs and cats should be on heartworm prevention year round. Treatment is available as a once monthly oral tablet or biscuit, as a once-monthly topical liquid applied over the shoulders or as a 6 month injection that is given twice a year.

Heartworm disease may cause irreversible heart damage so preventing heartworms is the best way to care for your pet rather than treating for heartworms after he has them. 

Trifexis is a once-a-month heartworm and flea pill given orally. It kills heartworms and fleas and is considered the best flea control product available. It is quickly becoming the leading marketing product for heartworm and flea control. Comfortis is the flea-only pill given once monthly and Trifexis has added to it the heartworm prevention. We highly recommend this product as it has proven to be very safe and effective. 

Heartgard is a chewable biscuit that is given once a month and is well tolerated in dogs and cats. This preventative also eliminates the intestinal parasites hook and roundworms and was one of the first monthly preventative medicines on the market. It is recommended that this medication not be used in any type of Collie or Sheltie dog.

IverHeart is a flavored tablet that has the same heartworm and intestinal worm medication as Heartgard and is our most economical 6 month product and it is well tolerated in dogs and cats and it protects against heartworms as well as eliminating intestinal worms. 

ProHeart is a 6 month injection for heartworm control and has been proven to be safe and very effective for heartworm prevention. One injection will provide 6 months of heartworm prevention and the shot is given twice a year.

Revolution is a topicai multipurpose preventative that can be used on dogs and cats. It is very safe and popular among cat owners as it provides coverage for heartworms, ear mites, fleas, some ticks and sarcoptic mange. The benefits for dogs are similar, and this medication will remain effective even after a bath or swimming and is also safe for use in pregnant or nursing females. This is one of our most popular products.

Advantage Multi is a topical multipurpose heartworm and flea preventative and is very similar to Revolution. It can be used on dogs and cats and is applied once a month between the shoulder blades.

Interceptor is a flavored heartworm preventative tablet. It is administered once a month, and like Heartgard it eliminates the hookworm and roundworm intestinal parasites and additionally eliminates whipworms.

Sentinel is a heartworm preventative that has the same medication as Interceptor, but also the added benefit of a flea egg sterilizer. This medication will prevent flea eggs from hatching; it does not kill adult fleas. This product works well when all dogs are treated with Sentinal and they area kept in their own environment. Since the flea eggs will not hatch the flea population is kept to a minimum.

Flea and Tick Medication

Frontline Plus is a topical flea and tick medication, applied once a month between the shoulder blades. It can be applied once monthly but a single dose can remain effective for flea control for up to three months and it also kills flea eggs. For tick control it should be applied once a month. It is well tolerated in dogs and cats and even pregnant females and is safe to use on puppies and kittens as early as 8 weeks of age. It is one of our most popular products. This medication will remain effective even after a bath or swimming.

Certifect is a topical flea and tick medication with Amatraz which speeds up how quickly ticks are killed, by forcing the tick move through the medication on the hair. It is the same as Frontline with just the addition of the Amatraz. The Amatraz in Certifect may also help in the treatment of Demodectic Mange. 

Advantage is a topical flea control that is applied once a month between the shoulder blades. This medication will kill 98-100% of fleas on the pet within 12 hours and larval flea stages will be killed if they come in contact with the treated pet. It is well tolerated in cats and dogs and is safe to use on puppies and kittens as early as 7 weeks of age and is one of our most popular products. This medication will remain effective even after a bath or swimming. Advantage works very well on fleas but does not affect ticks.

Comfortis is a once a month pill for flea control administered orally. Although a little more expensive than Advantage or Frontline our client feedback tells us that this is one of our most effective products and it is very safe. It is recommended for use on dogs and puppies at least 12 weeks old. It must be given with a meal and can be used along with other flea and tick medications.

Preventic Collars can kill ticks for up to 3 months. The medication in the collar will paralyze the tick’s mouth causing the tick to die and eventually fall off. The Preventic collar is for use on dogs 12 weeks and older. This product can be used with some other flea medications. This is one of our most cost effective and simpliest forms of tick control and is a very popular product.

Promeris Promeris is an effective flea and tick medication but it’s primary use in our clinic is in the treatment Demodectic Mange as the active ingredient of Promeris is Amitraz which is the only effective treatment for this genetically inherited mange and Promeris does an excellent job in treating this condition. This medication remains effective after bathing and if desired it can be applied every 3 months for flea control instead of once a month, but if ticks are a concern the medication should be applied once a month. Promeris is only for dogs 8 weeks and older.
 

Capstar is a once-daily oral flea treatment for use on both dogs and cats and can be used on pets as young as 6 weeks of age. Although Capstar only works for 24 hours, it is very effective in killing fleas and works within 30 minutes.
